The aim of the opening conference was to gain a comparative understanding of the debates surrounding the role and status of English in Europe today. Topics included, but not be limited to:

  • The teaching of English
  • Language policy and language management (including language education policy)

  • Discourses of English as a lingua franca and global language
  • English and globalisation
  • English language hegemony and language diversity
